Biscuits
These simple biscuits can be used for any meal and the ingredients are readily available around the world. Great for breakfast with a little butter and jam, hamburger buns, and as a staple when combined with a little Southern Style Gravy.
Ingredients:
2 cups (500 ml) all purpose flour
1 Tbsp (15 ml) baking powder
1 tsp (5 ml) granulated sugar
1/2 tsp (2 ml) salt
1/3 cup (75 ml) cold butter
3/4 cup (175 ml) milk
Preheat the oven to 450° F (230° C).
Mix together the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Add the butter to the mixture and cut it in until the mixture looks like coarse cornmeal. Stir in the milk and mix until it forms a soft dough. Transfer to a lightly floured surface and knead 10 or 12 times, until it is pliable.
With a rolling pin, or whatever else you have available, roll the dough out until it is about 1/2 inch (1 cm) thick. Cut with a round cookie cutter or sharp knife to the size you want and place on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake for 12 to 14 minutes, until lightly browned on top and nicely puffed.
If you are using the stovetop or a grill, use a very low temperature and cook 5 or 8 minutes on each side. Flip them over and cook the other side when the surface begins to turn light brown.
Combine with Southern Style Gravy for a great Biscuits and Gravy meal!
