My Honda PCX 150 – six months later

It has been exactly six months since we purchased our new Honda PCX 150. I have had quite a few visitors to my original posting that I wrote when I first bought the scooter so I thought I would check in and give an little review now that I have had it for several months.

I have to say we have been very satisfied with our purchase and were very happy that we made the decision to buy a scooter rather than a motorcycle here in Chiangmai. It has been plenty big enough, and not having to shift while riding through Chiangmai traffic has been a major advantage. How to Drive in Thailand

Well, we’ve been here over six  months now and I think I can hand out a few pointers about driving in this country, at least from a Chiangmai perspective. I wrote an earlier post about how to survive on a scooter here so this is just a little update after spending time every day in the traffic for the last few months. It is by no means an exhaustive list but only some pointers to let you drive and stay alive here. As usual, these pointers are directed more towards riding scooters and motorcycles than driving a car, but most will apply to both. Unlike China, where I lived the last six years, the Thai drivers do have some sort of order and actually do follow some of the rules. Surviving on a Scooter (in Thailand)

The most popular tourist season is coming up. As the climate gets colder in other parts of the world, people scramble to places such as Thailand to enjoy a few warm days in the sunshine.  Many will rent scooters to get around the areas they visit and many have never been on a motorized two-wheel vehicle before. It can be a recipe for disaster!

I started riding later in life, sometime shortly after I turned fifty. However, I made up for lost time and since then have criss-crossed North America several times on a large cruiser (Kawasaki Nomad 1500) along with many shorter road trips and rides.  For the last six years, I rode a scooter and a motorcycle daily in China’s traffic. And now, I am zipping around Chiangmai on my new Honda PCX150. I have yet to have an accident…ever. I attribute this to experience, but even more so, to the two riding courses I took when I first started on my large motorcycle back in Canada.
