Who would have thought? A really good music festival at a mall! Yep, that’s where we ended up last night from 4pm until almost midnight as the Chiangmai Promenada Resort Mall hosted the Chiangmai International Music Festival. It all took place on the beautiful grounds in front of the mall. The Promenada is not your average set-up for a shopping space and, since it opened earlier this year, has hosted several different promotional activities.
Once again, we hopped on our trusty Honda and headed out along Highway 11 to the show. It’s only about fifteen minutes from our home via the highway. Of course, as always, we arrived earlier than we should have and everything started later than advertised. The food booths were all incredible but not yet open so we ducked into The Duke’s restaurant for a small pizza and beer while waiting for the show to start.
By the time we got back outside, a small crowd had started to gather. After copious opening speeches and blah, blah, blah, the music began. And what a group of performers they were. Everything from Indonesian traditional music to opera to rock. I always love listening to live music and this night was no exception. Everything was well organized and the whole spectacle ran flawlessly as one performer after another took to the stage. The countries represented included Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, the U.S., India and South Africa.
The nice thing about festivals here are all the wonderful food booths that spring up with them. Once again, several local hotels and resorts were in attendance with their usual wide selection of international dishes. And, of course, there was also a good variety of liquid refreshments available.
The whole show is going to be repeated tonight! If you are in Chiangmai and happen to stumble across this blog posting, I would highly recommend you go on over and check it out! There are shuttle buses going back and forth from many locations around the city. You won’t be disappointed. If you miss it this year, watch for the dates next year!
The Chiang Mai Fest 2014 continues tonight from 16:30 to midnight. Performers include Take Two, Super Ritard, Natda Viyakam, Mathew Mole, Iyeoka, Akasha and Hot Water.
