A local mall/ hotel owner and well-known businessman pulled off a great PR stunt this week by dumping 40 tonnes of salt on the area surrounding the various shops and recently built hotel at a nearby intersection. Both locals and tourists have flocked to this “winter wonderland” since it first appeared a few days ago. However, from an article that showed up today, it seems that the guy did not receive permission for this overnight snowfall and now there are concerns about its environmental impact on the city. I think we are pretty safe unless it decides to rain before it is cleaned up and taken away. There are plans in place for the salt to be put to commercial use once the holiday is over so it will all be recycled.
Anyway, I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! It has been an interesting first year and a half in Chiang Mai. “Retirement” has been busy as I continue to build websites, work on this blog and continue to write guest articles for various expat websites. I have also written several pieces for International Living Magazine and more articles are in the works for the coming months. We have been active with the newly formed Ulysses motorcycle club which has got us out into the countryside to see another part of Chiang Mai and completed our first six week course in conversational Thai. So far, no regrets on the big move, especially when I look outside at the warm sunshine beaming down onto our large balcony.
In the coming year, we look forward to many more adventures on this side of the world!
